The art of the violin maker has been refined over centuries, reaching its apogee in Cremona in the early 18th Century. Tools and techniques have changed little and alterations in design have been minor, for the patterns of excellence are well established.
What the individual luthier brings to his work, therefore, rests upon his individual stamp, the eye for details and meticulous attention to craftsmanship. The luthier is, in a sense, the inheritor of a tradition which seeks to extend the capacities of new players and changing demands. Aesthetic, appeal, beauty of tone, and balance throughout the range of pitch distinguishes the fine instrument.
